During April-May 2016 the meat exports from India was estimated to be $568 million; a report presented in Lok Sabha by Nirmala Sitharaman who is the Commerce and Industry Minister this data.
For Indian meat industry Vietnam, Malaysia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Iraq are the major importers. Processed meat and meat of buffalo, sheep and goat are the main exported products.
In the April and May months of this year, 1, 92,748 tonnes of meat and meat products have been exported, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha Nirmala Sitharaman said. Sitharaman also told, “representations are being met from time to time from some spiritual/social organisations demanding a ban on the export of meat and its products.” She added that the ban on beef export will continue.
